China’s Water Resources Minister Li Guoying met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. During the meeting, a consensus was reached on increasing cooperation between the two countries in the management of various rivers in Bangladesh, including the Teesta.

The meeting took place on Thursday (June 25) at 12 PM local time in Beijing at the State Guesthouse Diaoyutai.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister sought cooperation from the Chinese government in Bangladesh’s water resource management, highlighting the ongoing river dredging program in the country aimed at combating flood risks, protecting the environment, and ensuring proper management of water resources. He also expressed expectations for technical assistance from the Chinese government for Bangladesh’s Teesta management project.

In response, China’s Water Resources Minister gave a positive response and assured full cooperation with the Bangladesh government’s initiatives in water resource management.

He referred to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Bangladesh and China in 2005 and the visit of Chinese water experts to Bangladesh last year, stating that the existing bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and China in water resource management is practical and research-based.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister sought cooperation from the Chinese government in preventing river erosion, improving irrigation management, and developing river navigation in Bangladesh.

Regarding this, China’s Water Resources Minister said that Bangladesh could utilize China’s experience in water management. He also invited Bangladeshi water experts and officials involved in this sector to receive training in China.

Present at the meeting were Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny, Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Advisor Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and Labor and Employment Affairs Advisor Mahadi Amin, and Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Atiqur Rahman Rumon.
